Beach Street Loft
with Andrea Leers
This space in a former leather factory was converted to living and working space for the architect. It is designed around an inhabitable staircase, which serves to differentiate the functional elements of the plan and link the three levels of the space. The view up the staircase culminates in a skylight, while the stepped platforms themselves can be used for viewing films on the opposite wall. The stair creates an interior landscape which substitutes for the lack of exterior views, and heightens the sense of spaciousness through the use of color and perspective illusion.
