The new Center for the Arts adjoins the existing theater and student center on the campus of Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania. Like the University of Virginia School of Architecture, this project involved adding to existing facilities.
The building houses the Freedman Art Gallery, a showcase for contemporary art, as well as studios for visual and performing arts and state of the art music practice facilities. The design organizes the arts components to form a quadrangle with existing structures. A circular courtyard connects the building to the quadrangle, and creates a gateway to the campus, welcoming members of the surrounding community.
Sculptor Mary Miss collaborated on the design of the courtyard, which has become a focus for the campus.
The 35,000 square foot facility contains galleries, and auditorium, and support spaces.
